About the Artwork
“Last Light over Komodo — Flores Sea” captures a fleeting moment during my expedition through the Komodo Islands, where traditional wooden sailing vessels gather on the waters as the sun disappears beyond the volcanic horizon.
The scene unfolds beneath a dramatic sky of deep indigo, violet, and burning gold, with the final light of day breaking through the clouds and reflecting across the restless waters. In the foreground, a traditional Indonesian phinisi sailing vessel becomes the visual anchor, its warm interior lights contrasting beautifully with the cool tones of the approaching dusk.
Beyond the boats, the rugged silhouette of Komodo’s volcanic landscape rises from the sea, creating a powerful sense of scale and isolation. The scattered vessels, flying seabirds, and glowing horizon bring movement and life to an otherwise vast and timeless landscape.
