About the Artwork
“Volcanic Dawn — Mount Bromo” captures the extraordinary drama of Mount Bromo in East Java, photographed during my expedition into the volcanic landscapes of the Tengger region.
At first light, the rising sun transforms the volcanic terrain into a scene of extraordinary intensity. Golden sunlight sweeps across the ridges of Mount Bromo, revealing the deep textures and contours of its volcanic slopes, while enormous clouds and mist drift through the ancient caldera.
The composition brings together several powerful elements of the landscape—fire, earth, cloud, and light. Bromo’s smoking crater rises from the centre of the frame, while the larger volcanic formations disappear and re-emerge through the clouds, creating a remarkable sense of depth and scale.
The soft mist covering the lower caldera contrasts with the warm golden illumination on the volcanic ridges, giving the photograph an almost surreal quality. For a brief moment, the landscape appears suspended between earth and sky.
Photographed during my East Java expedition, this was one of those rare moments when weather and light transformed an already dramatic landscape into something extraordinary. The constantly moving clouds made the scene change from one moment to the next, creating a fleeting composition that could never be precisely repeated.
For me, this photograph represents the raw power and timeless character of volcanic landscapes. Mount Bromo is not simply a mountain in this image—it becomes a symbol of the forces that continue to shape our planet.
